Reason I support the Trans Community: As someone who grew up in White Evangelical Conservatism, I was taught from a young age that being queer, gay, and trans was a sin and an affront to God. It wasn’t until my ballet teacher, who was openly gay, came into my life and became one of my greatest mentors and trusted adults, that I started questioning…why do we hate these people so much? And the pattern continued…more queer friends in the art world, in my social circles, and then my first trans friend in my mid 20s….and I realized, the hate is based in fear. Fear of “different” And Anything based in fear and not in love, is not of God.
I have since witnessed that it is the trans community who are constantly at the front lines when the rights of fellow humans are at risk, I’ve stood beside the Trans community at BLM protests, at Free Palestine rallies, and now at ICE detention centers. Because the trans community knows first-hand what dehumanization feels like. And the Trans Community has been more of an example of Jesus teachings, than any Pastor or church goer I’ve grown up with….and that’s why I will forever continue to fight for the humanity and dignity of all people regardless of gender, race, or religion.
