Unity Nebesniak

Unity (they/them & he/him) is an artist that creatures’ surreal decorative works that focus on the human body, decomposition, environmental change, and queer identity.

They value function, decoration, and fluidity in their works. For Unity, it is important that a piece enhances a person’s life by looking at or using it. That its ornamental elements blend into its function. A random word scribbled on a mug takes on a new life when someone reads it each morning with their coffee. Art enriches our world.

For Unity, art is a transformative process of thought into manifestation. They channel stream of consciousness paintings on canvas and clay to cope with worries about the environmental, dysphoria, death, and anxiety. Churning feelings into abstract lines, florals, fungi, skeletons, and contrasting colors.

Unity is a ceramicist painter, and fiber artist. He embraces the feeling of a medium, the tactile nature of crafting something with your hands.

“Gender affirming care saved my life. I recently finished a self-portrait that I started in the summer of 2022 when my gender dysphoria was at its worst. I was digging through old paintings, and found it in the pile deemed to be painted over; I couldn’t bring myself to cover the old sketch. I finished the painting over 3 years later, now 3+ years on HRT, and it was a conversation I needed to have with myself: to tell 2022 Unity that things would be okay, that starting Testosterone was not a want but a need. Finishing that painting made me so thankful for my access to gender affirming care.”
